Storage Solutions

Image
One limitation with the Eriba Caravan is the very limited storage space. There are lots of roof lockers for odds and ends, food and gadgets, but they are quite small and not very deep. For clothing, there is a single 'half height' wardrobe above the heater. It's a good size for hanging jackets and the likes, but there is no shelving for other items of clothing. My normal routine is to fold my clothes on the floor of the wardrobe, but it soon becomes a heap with the movement on the road, or the raking around for clothes. I noticed a hanging storage 'shelf' which looked ideal. Works perfect! Still leaves room for hanging jackets and a space below for shoes. Result!

Around the Dornoch Firth

This is night No.68/2018 living in my caravan. This is my second night at a CL on Davochfin Farm near Dornoch. Slept really well, getting up around 0615. It was a bit dull, but dry with a light breeze. First walk of the day was down past the Golf Range, through the moorland, and onto the beach. Lovely walk, never seen anyone else. Before breakfast, I wanted a shower. Being a CL, it's a case of bring your own. In my caravan 'down time' I got a popup shower ten which performed excellently. Easy to put up, and a doddle to fold away. My arrangement of water in a bucket, shower pump immersed in the tank, and the shower powered from a 12v outlet in the van. It was a great shower! Scrubbed clean, took the dogs around Camore Wood near the site. Interesting bumps in the landscape, they're the archaeological remains of 'huts', known as 'hut rings', elevated patches of ground where families lived. From there went into Eggerton to the caravan shop ...

Davochfin Farm

This is night No.67/2018 living in my caravan. Now at Davochfin Farm CL, near Dornoch. A great CL, 2 nights with power for £20. Woke this morning around 0600 to a fantastic sunrise and hardly a breath of wind. The previous evening had been blowing a full force gale and it was nice to be still for a change. There was no-one around as we got ready to head to the beach for a morning walk. The only thing I could see were rabbits grazing around the site. It placed these two on red alert! The walk along the beach was fine, but I was conscious that the herd of cattle on the golf course were fairly close to the path I take to cross the fairways, so had to keep my eyes open. Sheep too, very close nearer the beach. Uneventful though, and we soon headed back to the van for breakfast. It was a fine morning and instead of risking a cattle encounter, we headed 5 mins along into the town down to the West Beach. Great warm walk with the dogs. It is possible to walk all the way to Go...

Touring in Brora

Image
This is night No 66/2018 living in my caravan. It's my second night in Brora C&MC Site in Dachalm near Brora. Slept like a log last night. My knee is on the mend. I had been up most of the night before with the pain, but last night I was in my bed at about 2030 (!) waking around 0600. Took the dogs along the beach next to the site first thing and in addition to the herd of cattle roaming around the course, there is also a huge number of sheep. These crofters rights are obviously taken as a granted in these parts. The course is covered in cow and sheep shit! After getting some breakfast, we headed out to Balbair Woods near Golspie. It forms part of the Loch Fleet NNR. A great forest for walking. Nice paths and a fine wee footbridge over a drainage ditch. Really tall and very uniform Scots Pine trees lining the route like an avenue. The path is around a 45min stretch to a bird hide overlooking Loch Fleet, and back. Foresters obviously have too much time on the...

Culloden to Brora

Image
This is night No 65/2018 living in my caravan. Now at Brora C&MC Site in Dachalm near Brora. A very reasonable £26 for 2 night. I was last here 6th May 2018. It is a good site right next to a cracker of a beach, pristine golden sands. Got up around 0600. Did not sleep well at all. A couple of days ago I felt a pain in my knee which got worse and last night it was hard to sleep through the agony! As soon as we were up and about, I drove the short distance to Balloch where there's a Scotmid. Got Ibuprofen and Paracetamol and a pint of milk to wash it down with. There's a good community woodland in Balloch which was ideal to give the dogs a blast. Fortunately, the painkillers also seemed to be working and the walk got easier as I struggled round. Today was going to be a bit of a rest day. I've probably been doing 5hrs a day walking the dogs recently and I think I must have strained my knee! Left Culloden around 0930 and had a fine drive north to Brora. It's ...

The Forests around Culloden

Image
This is night No 64/2018 living in my caravan. This is also my second night of this trip at the Culloden Moor C&MC Site near Inverness. This was very much a day of walking in Forests. This area is fantastic for good walking forests, all within a fairly short distance of the site. I got up around 0600 and our first walk was round the forest adjacent to the site. Entry is through a gate in the site fence and really handy for early morning and late evening walks. It was a bright morning, it did remain bright and showery for the remainder of the day. Quite cool too, at around the 15c mark. Occasionally there is a fairly harmless 'Mexican Standoff' at breakfast time! Good opportunity to use my first real indulgence of this trip, a new Black and Decker Dustbuster hoover for the van! Was reduced by £25 in the nearby Tesco. Works a treat on a small space like this van. After showering and some breakfast, we headed for a short drive to Culloden Moor Forest. A...
