Around Kintail

Image
This is night No 5/2021 living in my caravan and it's my 5th and final night in Morvich C&MC in Kintail in the Scottish Highlands. I should really have been making my way home today, but I really wanted just one more day in this area. Fortunately, there was a pitch available. From Saturday onward, the site looks like is booked out. Strange really, as the independent sites I've passed locally look open, but empty? Possibly the easier booking system with the C&MC? Possibly marketing? Woke to another fine morning. Headed down to the river with the dogs around 0645. Spot the deer! After breakfast, we headed up for a walk around the forest above Inverinate. Saw a large blue beetle. Was probably around 25mm long. Next, headed up to Mam Ratagan for some pictures of the Five Sisters. We then went for a walk on the forest tracks below Mam Ratagan, and then headed to nearby Ard Hill. Got soaked here in the heavy showers. I'm sure this must be a fish farm tender on Loch Alsh...

Leitir Fura

This is night No.3/2021 living in my caravan. It's also my 4th night at Morvich C&MC Site in Kintail, in the Scottish Highlands. Woke to a very fine morning and after an early morning wander by the river, followed by an 'awning' shower, and breakfast, we headed out for a day of good walking starting with the forest walk from the nearby village of Inverinate. It's a good walk which we've done many times, it's about   From here we headed up the road to Kyle of Lochalsh, over the Skye Bridge and down the Sleat Peninsula to Kinloch. There is a forest walk here which leads along the old cattle droving route to the long abandoned settlement of Leitir Fura. The route follows a pretty good path which is partly gravel, and part rock. This was the route which drovers used to take the cattle across Sleat to the Kyle Rhea narrows where the cattle were made to swim across to Glenelg to continue their journey to the markets of central Scotland. Some lovely flowers. And ev...

Sandaig

This is night number 3/2021 living in the caravan. It's also our 3rd night at Morvich C&MC Site in Kintail in the Highlands. Woke to a settled, bright morning and took the dogs along the river next to the site. Spotted what I think was a pair of Common Merganser? After breakfast, had a surprisingly good shower in the awning! I used my Geyser hot water setup, which performed great. No need to recycle the water through the heater as straight from cold gave a good hot shower. I've met up with my friend at Morvich (who also has a Puck) and we had a good night of natter and drams last night and we chatted this morning about walk option. We agreed on Sandaig Islands, the fictional Camusfearna in Gavin Maxwells books on otters including The Ring of Bright Water. As I turned at Shiel Bridge, I had to slow for a herd of Feral Goat. They are common in this area. Headed over Mam Ratagan, through Glenelg and parked up near the start of the walk on the Arnisdale Road. Walked past the ...

Second night at Morvich

Image
Tonight is night 2/2021 living in my caravan, and is my second night at Morvich C&MC site in Kintail in the Highlands.  Lovely night last night. Not often see herds of red deer on a dog walk! Interesting piece of history I recalled about this site. I think Morvich consisted of a small farm back in the 1840's, possibly the building at the entrance to the site was the original farmhouse. It is now the house and office of the National Trust Ranger for Kintail. This house was the subject of a parliamentary enquiry back in the 1840's as it was the scene of death by starvation of some of it's residents during the Scottish Famine when, like Ireland, the potato crop failed and tenants were not given support from landowners. Interesting read  here I slept like a log, a perfect nights sleep despite the showers and the drip on the roof due to an overhanging tree! Took the dogs along by the river around 0630, and after breakfast, in between the showers, I put up the awning and ...
