Culzean Castle, May 2022

Following a great stay at Garlieston, I travelled around 90mins north to Culzean Castle C&CC Site. The site is located within the Castle Estate, right by the entrance. I've been here before and there are some excellent walks direct from the site. The Castle and the grounds are managed by the National Trust for Scotland and in my opinion, this is definitely their flagship property. The site staff offer a few different pitching options, most having a great view west over the water. I was pitched behind a very nice late Puck L. The surrounding estate was great for walking with forest and track walking. The dogs were in their element and spent all the walking flushing pheasants which seemed to be everywhere! Out on the Firth of Clyde, heading out to the North Channel I spotted a large cruise ship, the Emerald Princess. On the 'Ship AIS' site, it was sailing from Greenock to Southampton on the last leg of a one way cruise from Fort Lauderdale in Florida to Southampton. I s

I visited Garlieston C&MC in Dumfries and Galloway as part of a tour I was on covering the South West of Scotland. I stayed a total of 4 nights, taking my tally of nights stayed in the van to 22 for this year. I was last on this site just a few weeks ago, and I altered my route to avoid some of the extremely potholed  roads I'de been led on before. The roads through the Galloway Forest have deteriorated massively in the last couple of years, so I opted for the just slightly longer Girvan to Newton Stewart road which was a lot better, and to be honest, quite a fast road. It took me around 5 hrs, another advantage being that Girvan even though quite small, now has an Asda for stocking up. The weather was mainly dry for the 5 days, with the exception of one day where it really was torrential. I pitched in the separate walled area of the site which was quite quiet, but did fill up as the days went on. I think it was probably folk extending the May Bank Holiday. Did get some compa

Nairn, April 2022

This is a post about my recent trip to the Nairn C&CC Site, just outside the Town of Nairn at Delnies Wood. It was the second and probably first 'proper' trip in my Eriba Triton. My last trip had been a bit of a test of the new van, but I had discovered that the battery wasn't charging correctly and the waste tank flap valve on the toilet tank broke. I repaired both these faults; the van charger had been installed before I got the van and was wired wrong, and I managed to pick up the toilet part from Perthshire Caravans on my return from Melrose. This trip was from the 19th 'til the 25th of April, and took me to a total of 18 nights living in the van so far this year. The weather in Nairn was generally dry although a couple of days the coast was plagued by sea haar. However, when it was clear it was lovely. The six nights are a good break at Nairn. There are plenty of walks from and around the site, and some outstanding beach walking just minutes away in the car.
